Phil Johannes, Photography has been my creative outlet for over 45 years. Initially I concentrated on black and white images by developing and printing in my darkroom. I have worked with all formats of cameras and film; 35mm, 2¼, 4x5, 6x7 and 8x10. In the 1970’s I returned to college and studied photography at the College of Marin under Thomas Johnson and Timo Pajunen.
I am a graduate of Arizona State University with a dual major in anthropology and history. My main career in life has been as a pilot and I spent ten years as a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, flying over 250 combat missions in SE Asia. Later, I spent 28 years as an airline pilot, living in Mill Valley, Seattle, Santa Fe and Sonoma. I also owned and operated a photography business specializing in portraits, families, commercial work, and professional color printing.
Upon my retirement from the airlines several years ago I switched from film to digital photography. I now create my images entirely using digital methods, from camera to computer to finished hand printed Giclée print.
At this time in my retirement I am now able to devote my time following my true creative passion - photography.
I believe that a successful photographic image must be simple and straightforward yet have a quality of mystery and ambiguity. I am very concerned with the overall mood of the image which is enhanced by an acute clarity and an effective use of tone and color.
